Admiral RK Dhowan on Monday launched India’s latest destroyer, INS Vishakhapatnam. The destroyer is the first of the four  stealth destroyers that will be inducted in the Navy. The name of the project is Project15B. Although the ship has been launched now, it will be commissioned in July 2018. It will be during the christening of the ship that it will be officially named INS Vishakhapatnam. Under the project15B, the navy is slated to induct four stealth destroyers into its fleet.

Here we are going to tell you a few facts about INS Vishakhapatnam:

BrahMos missiles:  After the destroyer will be fully ready, eight BrahMos anti-ship missiles will be installed in the ship. The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile which was jointly developed by Russia and India.

Barak 8 missile: In all probability the Barak 8 missile will be test fired in October, this year. This missile will be added to both the stealth destroyers, INS Kolkata and INS Vishakhapatnam respectively.  INS Vishakhapatnam will have 32 long range-8 missiles in its arsenal. The missile is jointly being developed by India and Israel.

MF-STAR: Another Israeli piece of equipment which will be fitted on the destroyer will be the Multi-Function Surveillance Threat Alert Radar (MF-STAR). This particular system will provide a target to the Barack-8 missiles.

Biological Warfare: Another interesting feature of this stealth destroyer will be its capability to function in areas which have been exposed to nuclear, chemical and biological fallout. For this purpose, this will have a Total Atmospheric Control System. The crew will have special suits to keep the ship operational during such crises.

Torpedo launcher:  To enhance the destroyer’s anti-submarine capabilities, it will also be fitted with twin torpedo launchers and rocket launchers which will be developed indigenously.

Central Connectivity to all the systems: The other systems which will be included in the destroyer will be directly connected to the Ship Data Network (SDN), Automatic Power Management System (APMS), Combat Management System (CMS) and the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).

Stealth features:  The stealth features which the ship has are the latest and better than the previous versions. The shape of the destroyer and the radar transparent deck which will be fitted on the ship will make it difficult for the enemy to detect the ship.

Make in India: Probably the best feature of this stealth destroyer is that it is 65 percent of the ship is indigenous. 11 of the weapon and the alarm systems that will be fitted to the destroyer will be indigenous.

Fire powerhouse: INS Vishakhapatnam will be one the world’s most heavily armed ship. With 32 Barak-8 missiles and 16 BrahMos supersonic missiles, it will have the capability to attack land targets which are around 300 km away. The heavyweight torpedoes that it will carry will have the capability to attack a ship which is a 100 km away.
