2015 – The year of bans
No one had ever imagined that the early months of 2015 would be the most happening months. It seems that the government is so keen of the word ‘ban’- from documentaries to food, the government of India has banned quite a few items in the country, which has sparked many nationwide protests on social media. The citizens of this country are simply appalled by the number of bans which have been imposed in the recent months.
We bring you a list of things that have been banned in India.
Beef ban in Maharashtra: The onset of March saw the ban on beef in Maharashtra. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance had earlier tried to ban beef in the state in 1995, but did not get the President’s nod, however, they were lucky this time around. The ban sparked quite an outrage all over social media. Possession of beef will lead to a fine of Rs 5,000 or a 10-year prison term.
Ban on cuss words: The censor board probably showed their short-sightedness when they banned the use of cuss words in films. The censor board had proposed a ban on 28 cuss words. Words such as lesbian, haramipana and haramkhor have been removed from the movie Dum Laga Kay Haisha. It seems that the censor board is keen to minimize the ‘Freedom of Expression’ in the movies.
Ban on BBC’s documentary, India’s Daughter: When a few clippings from the documentary were released, there were large scale upheavals in the social media circles. Many termed it as unethical, and wanted the documentary to be banned. The government just did that. They banned the documentary on the grounds of that it showed India in a poor light and later claimed that the filmmaker had not acquired the necessary permissions.
Ban on Fifty Shades of Grey: Although, It’s a land of Kamasutra, but we have very little tolerance when it comes to movies depicting sex. Even though many of the sex scenes and nude scenes were removed from the movie to make it more bend towards Indian audiences, the censor board still banned the film from releasing in India.
Ban on parties which has foreigners as invitees: Despite the fact that Karnataka is one of the most progressive states in India, the state government has put a ban on night parties in the state, if the organisers don’t follow certain rules. Some of these rules include doing a background check of the foreigners attending the party and allowing the police officials to take photographs or do videography of the whole event.
