It was a first time that a fighter aircraft had landed on the Yamuna Expressway. Indian Air Force’s Mirage 2000 in a first, landed on the Yamuna Expressway on Thursday at 6.40 AM. This was a trial run, where the Indian Air Force is planning to open up emergency airstrips across the country. The IAF had been considering for quite some time to use national highways as emergency runways. For this particular trial, all the facilities such as temporary Air Traffic Control, safety services, rescue vehicles and bird clearance parties were set up by the IAF. The aircraft had made a practice approach at the runway and came down to 100 meters before landing in the second approach.
Officials from the Air force have said that such landings will be carried out during emergencies, where there are no active airports.
