India is obsessed with movies and its stars. During the weekends, people throng the theaters to watch their favourite movies and also watch their favourite stars on the silver screen. With Khans of the Bollywood ruling the roost, there is a lot of number crunching which goes on. People tend to look at the earnings of their movies in the 1st week. Most of the movies over the past few years have managed to earn more than 100 crores in the first week itself.
Here we bring you the list of the top-grossing Bollywood movies in the 1st week.
Dabangg 2: The film became popular because of its prequel Dabangg which also saw Sonakshi Sinha make her debut. Salman plays the bad (good) cop, Chulbul Pandey. The character was so popular with the masses that it managed to rake the mullah for the Sequel (Dabangg 2) also. Release date – 21st December 2012, Opening Weekend Earnings – 106.78Cr.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani: It is pretty much safe to say that this was the last hit movie of Ranbir Kapoor. It was also one the most awaited movie of 2013 as it was the first time that Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone came together for a movie. It wasn’t just the chemistry, the movie also dealt with the ideas of the quest for freedom and the quest for true love. Release Date- May 31st, 2013, Opening Weekend Earnings – 107.61Cr.
Singham Returns: The movie was a remake of a popular South Indian movie Singham 2. The movie was packed with action sequences and killer stunts. Although the movie had almost nothing to show as far as the storyline was concerned, it still managed to collect 112Cr in the first week. Release Date – August 15th, 2014, Opening Weekend Earnings- 112.59Cr.
Bodyguard: Another remake of a hit South Indian movie, Bodyguard had Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. The best thing about the movie was the location, as most of the movie was shot at the Symbiosis Campus, Lavle. Release Date- August 31st, 2011, Opening Weekend Earnings – 115.00Cr.
Bang Bang: This movie is in the top 10 when it comes to the first-week earnings and it surprised everybody. The story of the movie was not even mediocre, but it still managed to earn 135.45Cr in its first week. Maybe the fact that it had Katrina Kaif and Hrithik Roshan in the lead has something to do with the first week earning. Release Date- October 2nd, 2014, Opening Weekend Earnings – 135.45Cr.
Ek Tha Tiger: It is a story about two spies, one from and India and the other from Pakistan and how they fall in love. It was a perfect formula for success and even the earnings did not disappoint. Release Date- August 15, 2012, Opening Weekend Earnings- 154.21Cr.
Chennai Express: The movie where South India and North India converged. The movie was funny because the actors were trying too hard to be funny. The film was a complete stereotype and some of the action sequences are definitely worth the watch. Deepika is lovely as usual. Although it wasn’t even a one-time watch, the earnings indicate something else. Release Date-August 9 2013, Opening Weekend Earnings – 156.70Cr.
Happy New Year: What is with no-brainers grossing more and more in the opening week. This has to be the worst movie which has come out in the recent years, yet it managed to earn a lot. The movie had a star-studded cast which is the only reason why the movie earned so much. Release Date-October 24 2014, Opening Weekend Earnings – 157.7Cr.
Kick: Another Salaman Khan movie which has managed to earn more than 100Cr in the first week is Kick. In this movie again Salaman Khan is a do-gooder (Super Hero). Release Date- July 25th, 2014, Opening Weekend Earnings – 164.09Cr.
Krrish 3: India’s answer to Superman. If you ignore the music and the songs, the movie is quite fun. Kangana does a good job of a super villain. Hrithik looked marvelous as the superhero Krrish. Release Date- November 1, 2013, Opening Weekend Earnings – 166.52Cr.
PK: It is a refreshing change, as the story revolves around an alien who visits the earth and forms his own perspective of the earth and its people. This is also one movie which deserves to be in the list of top-grossing movies in the first week. Release Date-December 19 2014, Opening Weekend Earnings – 183.09Cr.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan: This movie again is a huge improvement to the list. Also, this movie also shows that Salman Khan can act. This movie is just not about Salman Khan, it is also about Munni and Nawazuddin- Siddiqui. The movie was liked by everyone and not just Salman Khan Fans. Release Date- July 17, 2015, Opening Weekend Earnings – 184.62Cr.
Dhoom 3: Just when we started to think that the quality of the list was improving, bang on top comes Dhoom 3. This is one movie which Amir Khan could have avoided, but alas, the damage has been done. Release Date- December 20, 2013, Opening Weekend Earnings – 188.99Cr.
