The day when India lost its steam
The Indian team rose from the ashes of the defeat of a test and a one-day series. People had written them off, and expected them to not even qualify for the quarter-finals. But the team gave a surprise to everyone. They not only reached the semi-finals, they destroyed every team against whom they played. In eight matches the Indian team took 77 wickets, they bowled out the opposition in all the matches except in the semi-finals. Indian batsmen were scoring runs throughout the tournament. They remained undefeated throughout the tournament. But all of it changed in the semi-final match against Australia.
The stage was set for the Indians to finally take the revenge from the Aussies of the series of horrible defeats early in the year. The Indian batsmen were scoring runs, the bowlers had bowled out their opposition in all the matches till now. The joke which was going around was that the Australian tail will finally get to wag, and wag it did. It wagged so much, that it took the match away from the Indians.
Steve Smith’s century had laid the foundation for the Australian team to show India that it won’t be easy to defeat the Australians in their own country. He went about doing his business in us usually cool manner and scored his fourth ODI hundred. Australia scored 328 runs, which also happens to be the highest score in a World Cup semi-final. Event their bowlers were at their best. They managed to go through the top order with much ease. The opening pair had a decent start (76 runs), but the rest of the partnerships were in bits and pieces. Although Rahane and Dhoni tried to salvage the game for India, but the going was perhaps too slow, and once Rahane got out, things became impossible for India. The asking rate just kept on climbing. None of the batsmen after Dhoni offered any kind of resistance to the Aussies.
Simply put, India was outplayed in every department by the Australians. This ended India’s road to the finals. This ended the hope for a lot of people. Because Australia defeated India, many will change their Sunday plans.
