SH Raza has been honoured with Commandeur de la Legion d’Honneur (the Legion of Honour) the highest civilian award. Raza has been living in France since 1950 but has maintained good ties with India as well.
Raza became India’s priciest modern artist when one of his seminal ‘Saurashtra’ fetched 16.42 crore in June 2010 at a Christie’s Auction.
“I salute France, it’s life art and people on this occasion and accept the honour greatly. I am deeply grateful,” Raza said in an acceptance speech read out by friend Ashok Vajpeyi a noted poet and essayist.
