Narayan Murthy was recently at Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Bangalore to deliver a lecture where he said, “I haven’t seen any earth shaking invention from India in the past 50 years.” He asked to be more open-minded and welcome foreign intellectuals and students, as well as create more opportunities to spend more time abroad for the students and faculties. He said that the magic of the 60s should be recreated.
Talking about the inventions such as car, electric bulb, radio, television, robots etc, he said that there were hardly any contributions of the Indian students from IITs and IIS in the past 60 years. The comparison of the country’s record with that of a single institution such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is great to inspire India’s young science and technology aspirants, but is utterly devoid of a sense of realism.
