An Interview With The Upcoming Designer – NAKITA SINGH

What sparked your interest in fashion?

I was always inclined towards art and clothes and I’ve always been fascinated by the charm of fashion and everything about it – be the clothes, colours, the show presentations etc. It was something that came very naturally and always seemed the right thing to do.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it show in your work?

At the moment I am fascinated by abstract and space – so my upcoming collection has both!

The fashion industry is very competitive, how difficult is it generating sales and convincing retailers, etc to stock your clothes?

As a newbie in the industry, it is a tedious process of convincing the retailers, etc. to stock up, the procedure takes time but there are portals that take new designers and help promote them.

What makes your clothes different from other fashion designers?

Every designer has their own sense of style, inspiration and work. My clothes for me are an art work – it’s very compositional and quirky. I take inspiration from anything that catches my attention – this collection has been inspired by flamingos, I try to work in terms of prints and embroidery and keep the silhouettes ready-to-wear.

How do you manufacture your designs – do you outsource it?

I have my tailoring unit, but apart from that I get my prints and embroidery outsourced.

Tell us about your latest collection.

My collection has been inspired by flamingoes and the Aztecs. I have experimented in terms of prints – I have used screen printing and abstract digital printing. I have also explored in terms of embroidery by using dakba, beads, etc.
The silhouettes are ready-to-wear and very commercial. I have a range of saris, high waisted skirts, crop tops, jackets and Indo-western wear. My clothes are something that all outlandish, young and people wanting to have their own style statement would wear.

How would you describe your personal fashion style?

My personal style is something that is comfortable yet different and quirky, I like layering and colours.

Do you have any advice on how businesses can use social media to promote themselves?

I think social media plays an important role in the visibility of a designer, which is very much required; it helps in promoting you as a designer, showcases your design and philosophy and also lets people know about you.

Are there any types of clothing that the youth should avoid wearing?

I think it’s important to be comfortable in what you wear and also have the confidence to carry anything with ease. And dress according to your body type – don’t wear what you don’t feel comfortable in.
